Obituary

I am not the greatest wordsmith in the world by any stretch of the imagination however, I do appreciate the written thoughts of myself and others. I am fascinated by the way people put words together to express themselves and reading is a great joy in my life. 

I must admit, I never thought of carrying my writing as far as Mr. Aaron Purmort. I can only say, Bravo! So many of us fear dying and refuse to face the fact that we will all experience at some point in time. It is obvious that Mr. Purmort did not fear and I applaud him for carrying his obvious love of words and stories into the here-after. 

Mr. Purmort wrote his own obituary, tongue-in-cheek to say the least...I would have liked to have met him in real life...

It's an illusion....

As you move your eyes around the image, dark dots quickly appear and disappear at the intersections. However, whenever you look directly on any intersection, the dark dots vanish.For years it was widely believed that the illusion worked because of 'lateral inhibition' - the term used to describe the complex way in which the cells on the back of the retina respond to areas of black and white. 

A few years ago this explanation was shown to be completely untrue, and so the explanation for the illusion remains a mystery.

Mazes?

An article entitled "Get lost in these amazing mazes!" has some great photgraphs to accompany the text. And a maze can be fun...only problem is, they included at least one labyrinth in the article and they're just not the same thing!

A maze has been created to make you think! You need to remember where you've been and keep in mind where you're going and yes, you CAN get lost. Ever watched the movie "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"? It has a real, live, wicked maze (and I do mean live!).

On the other hand, a labyrinth has only one way in and one way out. There are no unecessary detours. It is meant to be used spiritually. For meditation, for prayer or as a pilgrimage. Personally, I love labyrinth's but a maze? Not so much...

Polka Dots

The weather is warm, everyone feels it's time to be outdoors and so why not give the old house a new coat of paint? At least that's what Jim Deitz of Grand Forks thought. All was well until he hit upon an idea to make the house stand out from the others....Polka Dots! To say the neighbors are a little upset may be an understatement...but he checked the laws and it's not illegal! I think it's kinda cute...of course, it's not right next door to me...

Leap Day

Flight

I thought this fitting for the 29th of February which is officially "Leap Day".

Joe Ayoob has broken the distance record for the flight of a paper airplane. Of course Guinness has to verify it but it flew for 226 ft. 10"! Far outdistancing the competition at McClellan AFB. Anyone who has ever folded a piece of paper to enjoy the experience of watching it fly...here it is!



Years ago we had a lady in our congregation who was a wizard at folding paper airplanes out of church bulletins. My son could hardly wait for the end of worship so he could dash back and beg her to once again fold his bulletin. But he knew the rules, he could ask her to fold it...but he could NOT fly it in the sanctuary!

One Sunday morning after worship, I was entering the sanctuary from the choir room when an airplane went flying past my nose! What???!!! How many times had I told him??? As I proceeded to speak his name through gritted teeth, one of the "pillars" of the congregation hurried towards me saying, "Don't fuss at him, I've watched for weeks now and just had to see one of them fly, I threw it!" Needless to say, son rode home that day with a smug look on his face. He had watched his airplane soar up towards the lofty roof of the sanctuary, and didn't even get in trouble. It was a good day!

This Holiday season is no different, with a few seasonal twists recently added to Google Search.
In your Firefox or Google Chrome browser, visit Google’s Search page and perform a search of the words Let it snow to see a cascade of snow fall from the top of the browser window, rapidly filling up (and fogging up) your display. The effect is most prominent if you go full screen (typically F11 on your PC keyboard - you’ll have to manually zoom on a Mac.)

Use your mouse to wipe the snow away, or wait for your screen to become obscured enough for a Defrost button to appear, clearing it all up. Could I have one of those for my car please?

So far, I have not seen the snow fall effect work on Internet Explorer or Safari (Are there Scrooges at Redmond and Cupertino standing by, ready to ruin my Google Christmas fun?)

Performing a search for Hanukkah will provide a nice string of Stars of David to decorate your search results. Try out Santa Claus or Christmas Lights to get an old-fashioned string of lights instead. These low-tech options should work on all browsers.

The scariest...

Since it's Halloween, I thought I'd reveal the one monster that kept me awake at night when I was a child.
Frankenstein, Dracula and Werewolf were all sissies when compared to this guy, well at least in my mind. Needless to say, when I went fishing with Dad, I kept one eye on my bobber and one eye out for the monster.
